Matchmove (or 3D Tracking) is the critical first step in integrating computer-generated imagery with live-action footage. If the 3D camera track slips by even a fraction of a pixel, the illusion is broken and the CG elements will appear to slide across the screen.
At G3D Studio, our specialized tracking artists use industry-leading software like 3DEqualizer and Syntheyes to calculate exact lens distortion, focal lengths, and complex nodal pans. Whether tracking a handheld camera racing through a forest or matching the intricate bodily movements of a stunt actor, we provide rock-solid data for your 3D department.
Advanced Tracking Pipeline
Our pipeline is engineered for precision, generating accurate point clouds, solving complex lens distortions, and delivering clean Maya scenes.
01. Plate Prep & Analysis
We begin by analyzing the footage for lens distortion, rolling shutter artifacts, and focal length changes. We apply specialized grids to un-distort the plate before any tracking begins.
02. 3D Solving
Using 3DEqualizer or Syntheyes, we meticulously place tracking markers on static elements to solve the 3D camera path, or on moving actors to solve complex object animation.
03. Layout & Verification
Before delivery, we set up the 3D scene layout in Maya, placing proxy geometry (like ground planes and walls) and rendering a test composite to verify the track is completely locked.
Applications For Our Matchmove Services
- 3D Camera Tracking: Solving the exact movement, height, and rotation of the real-world camera for massive CG set extensions.
- Object Tracking / Rotomation: Tracking moving props or vehicles so CGI replacements can be perfectly attached.
- Body Tracking / Matchamation: Rig-matching a digital skeleton to an actor’s live-action performance for digital double replacements.
- Face Tracking: Precision tracking for digital makeup, aging, de-aging, and facial prosthetics.

The Foundation of CGI Integration
What software do your matchmove artists use?
+Our primary tracking software is 3DEqualizer, which is the absolute gold standard for feature film lens distortion and tracking. We also heavily utilize Boris FX Syntheyes and PFTrack depending on the specific requirements of your studio's pipeline.
What is the difference between Camera Tracking and Object Tracking?
+Camera tracking involves calculating the position and movement of the physical camera through a static 3D world. Object tracking (or Rotomation) is the process of tracking a moving object (like a car or an actor's head) within that world so that a 3D model can be perfectly attached to it.
How do you verify the accuracy of a 3D track?
+We never guess. We verify every track by importing the solved camera into Autodesk Maya or Nuke. We place proxy geometry (checkered cones, ground planes, or LIDAR scans) onto the solved point cloud and do a "slap-comp" over the original footage to ensure there is zero sliding.
What information do you need from the set for an accurate track?
+While we can often solve a camera "blind", providing on-set data guarantees mathematical perfection. We ideally request camera sensor size, exact lenses used, focal length data, lens distortion grids (checkerboards), and physical set measurements or LIDAR scans.
What formats do you deliver the final track in?
+We deliver the solved camera and point cloud in whatever format your 3D department needs. Most commonly, we provide an organized Autodesk Maya scene file (.ma / .mb), an Alembic cache (.abc), or a direct Nuke script (.nk) with the camera node attached.
