Years ExperienceFlawless Edge Extraction
Pulling a great key is rarely as simple as clicking a button. Uneven lighting, wrinkled screens, motion blur, and fine wispy hair require advanced extraction techniques to prevent hard, "cut-out" looking edges that ruin the cinematic illusion.
At G3D Studio, our specialized compositors use advanced node-based techniques within Nuke to isolate difficult subjects. We don't rely on a single keyer; we combine core mattes, edge mattes, and luminance keys to extract your actors perfectly, ensuring they blend seamlessly into their new digital environments.
Advanced Keying Pipeline
We utilize Foundry's Nuke and a combination of specialized algorithms like IBK and Keylight to achieve artifact-free alpha channels.
01. Plate Prep & Denoise
Before keying begins, we apply sophisticated degrain algorithms to remove camera noise. This prevents "chatter" or buzzing along the alpha edges of the extracted subject.
02. Core & Edge Mattes
We separate the extraction into multiple pieces. A solid "core matte" fills the body, while a delicate "edge matte" is pulled exclusively to retain fine hair, fur, and motion blur.
03. Spill Suppression
Green light naturally bounces off the screen onto the actor. We use advanced despill algorithms to neutralize this green cast and restore the natural skin tones and fabric colors.
Applications For Our Keying Services
- Blue / Green Screen Extraction: High-volume extraction for massive virtual production and sci-fi sequences.
- Fine Hair & Fur Detail: Preserving semi-transparent wisps of hair without losing background integration.
- Transparent Object Extraction: Keying through glass, water, car windows, and translucent fabrics using additive keying techniques.
- Luminance Keying: Extracting skies or bright windows based on brightness values rather than color.

Flawless Edge Extraction
What is the difference between Keying and Rotoscoping?
+Keying is the procedural process of removing a specific color (usually green or blue) using software algorithms. Rotoscoping is the manual process of drawing shapes frame-by-frame to isolate an object when no green screen is present. We often use roto to "garbage matte" and assist difficult keys.
How do you extract fine hair and motion blur?
+Fine hair and blur cannot be extracted with a harsh "core" key. We use specialized nodes in Nuke (like IBK Colour and Keylight) to pull delicate, semi-transparent edge mattes, ensuring the hair retains its natural softness over the new background.
What happens if the green screen is badly lit or wrinkled?
+Uneven lighting or wrinkles cause multiple shades of green that confuse basic keyers. We solve this by breaking the screen into sections, pulling multiple different keys for shadows and highlights, and blending them together into a single, perfect alpha channel.
What software do you use for keying?
+We perform all of our high-end extraction work in Foundry's Nuke. Its node-based architecture allows us to combine infinite layers of additive, luminance, and chroma keys to achieve flawless results.
What is green spill and how do you remove it?
+"Spill" occurs when the bright green screen reflects light back onto the actor's skin, clothing, or hair. We use advanced despill algorithms in Nuke that mathematically remove the green values and inject natural flesh or ambient tones back into the edges of the subject.
